How old are the books schools assign? Testing the dusty-classics story
The familiar story is that schools assign the same handful of mid-century classics forever. On state reading lists, that story is wrong: the distribution below leans hard contemporary. (Classroom-taught novels — what teacher surveys measure — really are older; the two things get conflated.)

Assignment-weighted: a book assigned 100 times contributes 100 rows, which is what "how old is the reading students are actually pointed at" means.

Questions this page answers
What is the average publication year of books assigned in U.S. schools?
The median is 2012 (we report the median, not the mean, because a handful of very old titles would drag a mean misleadingly early). Computed over 13,258 assignment records.
What percentage of assigned school books were published before 1970?
6.0% of assignments in this corpus are of books first published before 1970.
How many assigned books are from the last ten years?
36.4% of assignments are of books published in 2016 or later.
Why do surveys say schools teach mostly classics?
Because they measure a different thing. Surveys of English teachers capture whole-class novels, concentrated in high school, where the canon is old and stable. This corpus measures published reading lists — mostly elementary and middle grades, refreshed annually through award programs — so it moves with contemporary publishing. Both readings are true of their own data.
