How long is an assigned book? Median pages for every grade — and the 3rd-grade cliff

The median book assigned on U.S. school reading lists runs 208 pages — but the number climbs every grade: 40 pages in 2nd grade, 139 in 3rd, 228 in middle school (6–8) and 303 in high school (9–12). The single biggest jump is the 3rd-grade cliff: median assigned-book length multiplies 3.5× between 2nd and 3rd grade — the year picture books give way to chapter books.

Median page counts below are computed from 17,266 U.S. reading-list assignment records whose book has a known page count (83.0% of the corpus; assignments with unknown page counts are omitted, never guessed).

Medians are standard sample medians over assignment records (each appearance of a book on a list counts once), using the book's page count from the corpus reference table. Page counts are known for 17,266 of 20,804 assignments; rows without page data are excluded from length statistics and their exclusion is stated wherever it matters. Full detail: methodology.
